Hangman

Every round picks a random article from Wikipedia, and you guess its title letter by letter. It might be a famous scientist, a village in Poland or a beetle nobody has heard of. Afterwards you find out what it is.

Guess the title of a random Wikipedia article, letter by letter. After ten wrong letters the round is lost.

The articles are loaded directly from Wikipedia: once you start, your browser connects to the servers of the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikimedia's privacy policy

Click the letters or type them on your keyboard. Numbers, spaces and punctuation are shown from the start; accented letters count as their base letter.

How to play

  1. A random article is chosen, and its title appears as empty tiles.
  2. Guess a letter: every tile with it is filled in. A wrong letter adds a line to the drawing.
  3. Solve the title before the drawing is complete: after ten wrong letters the round is lost.
  4. The hint shows the article's short description, with the words of the answer hidden.

Where the words come from

With “Any random article”, the game asks Wikipedia for random articles, just like the “Random article” link on Wikipedia, and most of them are surprisingly obscure. “Well-known topics” picks from Wikipedia's list of about 1,000 vital articles instead. Disambiguation pages, lists and titles in other scripts are skipped.

Fair puzzles

Additions in parentheses, like “(planet)”, are left out of the puzzle. Accented letters such as é or ñ count as their base letter. Very short and very long titles are skipped, as are titles made up mostly of numbers.
